Standard home care (lice shampoo and combing) can result in dealing with lice for more than two weeks with repeated combing and possible spread to other family members.
A: First, inform anyone who lives in your home so they can take precautions and check themselves for lice. Most families choose to treat every family member for lice. Next, notify your child's school or daycare center, as they may need to inform other parents to watch for symptoms and take similar precautions. It's also a good idea to inform close friends and family members who have had recent contact with the affected person. Communicating promptly with these groups helps contain the infestation and facilitates quicker resolution.
A: If your child has a lice infestation, it's crucial to take swift and thorough action to prevent the spread and recurrence. At Lice Expert, we recommend the following steps: 1. Clothing and Bedding: Wash all your child’s dirty clothes, hats, bedding, and towels in hot water (at least 130°F/54.4°C) and dry them using a high-heat setting. This will kill any lice and nits (lice eggs) that may be on these items. 2. Stuffed Animals and Toys: Any washable stuffed animals and toys should also be cleaned in hot water and dried at a high temperature. For non-washable items (bike helmet included), seal them in a plastic bag for at least two weeks to ensure any remaining lice or nits are killed. 3. Hair Accessories and Brushes: Soak combs, brushes, and hair accessories in hot water (at least 130°F/54.4°C) for 5-10 minutes to disinfect them. 4. Furniture and Carpets: Vacuum your home thoroughly, especially carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture where lice may have fallen. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately in an outdoor trash can. 5. Backpacks and Bags: Wash your child’s backpacks, lunch bags, and other items they regularly use in hot water and dry them on high heat. If the materials can't be machine washed, consider wiping them down with a hot, damp cloth. Focus on items that have been in direct contact with the head, neck, or shoulders in the last 48 hours. Following these steps, you can effectively manage and eliminate the lice infestation from your child’s belongings.
